The 32-year-old American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift made the surprise announcement as the MTV VMA Awards were wrapping up in New Jersey.

Midnights, the new album, is set to be released later this year and explores “13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life.”

It was described by the pop star as “a journey through terrors and sweet dreams.”

Swift later tweeted images of the album cover with a description, confirming that the new music would be released on October 21.

“In love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears,” she wrote.

“We stare at the walls and drink until they respond.” We twist in our self-made cages, praying that we aren’t about to make some fateful life-altering mistake right now.

“This is a collection of music composed late at night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams.”

Swift thanked her fans as she accepted the night’s final award at the fan-voted ceremony, saying they had “emboldened” her.

“I was thinking that if you were going to be this generous and give us this (award), it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album comes out on October 21.”

Fans have gone crazy on social media to celebrate the singer’s new music.

“Just take my money now, I’m going to spend it all on this tour anyway,” one user wrote.
